Hemorrhoid Banding

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are dilated (enlarged) veins that occur in and around the anus and rectum. They may be external (outside the anus) or internal (inside the rectum). Internal hemorrhoids can e felt and seen as lumps or knots while internal hemorrhoids cannot be felt or seen.

What is Hemorrhoid Band Ligation?

Hemorrhoid band ligation is an in-office procedure used to treat hemorrhoids, during which a small rubber band is used to tie off the base of the swollen vein, cutting off the blood circulation to that vein and causing the hemorrhoid to fall off. This can be done for either internal or external hemorrhoids and is a relatively painless procedure. Treatment often needs to be repeated.
